In a blast from the past, we see the return of Joe Simon & Jack Kirby’s Fly, Fighting American, Private Strong, Bullseye, and Stuntman.
Some younger fans are wondering just who are these classic heroes?
The Fly
Young Tommy Troy sneaked into the attic of his employer, Mr. March, who was rumored to be a sorcerer. Stumbling upon an unusual ring, Tommy placed it on his finger and suddenly found himself face to face with Turan, emissary of the Fly People. Turan designated Tommy to be their champion, enabling him to wield all the powers of the lost fly race. By rubbing his magic ring, he was transformed into the mighty Fly.
Fighting American
Patriotic television newscaster Johnny Flagg, a war hero much given to warning America about the dangers of communism. Those self-same communist agitators promptly beat him close to death, but on his deathbed he asks his feeble brother Nelson, who had been scripting Johnny’s red-baiting speeches all along, to carry on his fight. Days later, the army summons Nelson to a secret lab where Johnny’s revitalized body has been dressed in a stylish red, white, and blue costume. In the ensuing operation, Nelson’s brain is transferred to Johnny’s body and the fearless Fighting American is born
Lancelot Strong
Dr. Malcolm Flemming raised his son Roger to use the untapped portions of the human brain, thus making him a superhuman. After Communist spies kill Dr. Flemming; the Strong’s, a farm couple, raise Roger. Once he hit his teens, he discovered the truth of his background and his powers. His father had created a patriotic costume for him, and he started off as the new superhero, the Shield. He soon joined the Army, with only life as a soldier and a double life as a superhero the Shield.
Bullseye
Stuntman
Stuntman is the alter ego of Johnny, a stuntman and movie actor who, in the world of the comic, becomes a real-life hero when he uses his acrobatic and fighting skills to combat crime and evil. The character’s stories typically involve Johnny getting involved in various adventures and mysteries while using his skills to defeat villains.
Captain 3-D
Captain 3-D, whose civilian name is Don Glass, is a superhero who possesses the ability to see and interact with the three-dimensional world. He wears a special pair of 3-D glasses that give him this unique perspective. With this ability, Captain 3-D fights various villains and threats in a world where he can perceive depth and dimension in ways that others cannot.
The character of Captain 3-D is notable for its use of 3-D imagery, which was a novelty at the time of its publication. The comic included 3-D glasses for readers to use, which added an extra layer of depth and immersion to the artwork.
Bullseye: Western Scout
The saga starts with Bullseye’s birth during an Indian attack. The raid turns into a massacre and only the baby and his grandfather, Deadeye Dick, escape. The boy is raised by his grandfather and an old Indian scout, Long Drink. Under the old man’s tutelage, Bullseye becomes a master marksman. The Indians return and brand the boy’s chest with a target, the Bullseye mark. Bullseye not only the master of pistols and rifles, but in all manners of weapons that are shot or thrown.
