When one cannot be both, is it better to be loved or feared? The new independent comics series Reign in Ruins explores the question and takes the reader through a labyrinth of depravity, bloodshed, sexuality, and trickery. Loosely based on the history of King Richard the Lionheart and his despised brother John, the story paints sisters competing for the domain of their kingdom.
The rightful queen, Mercia, “The Merciful” is compelled by a value set of impractical ideals such as nobility and compassion. Stubbornly, she clings to the notion that justice is destined to prevail. She is the personification of privileged guilt, poisoned by a heightened sense of empathy and often provoked into poor decisions by such considerations. She is love.
Nemesia represents substance abuse and her insecurities manifest as a lust for authority and adulation. Such as an addiction, her cravings are satisfied with excessively greater hits, with greater consequences following her exponentially cruel displays of power. Nemesia will avoid no measure of depravity or cruelty to ensure that the crown will never again be placed on her sister’s head. She is fear.
The story is set for astute and mature readers. This is not a venture for those expecting superheroes. One will appreciate the depiction of the fixed and growth mindsets and the subtle use of foreshadowing and symbolism. As the plot unfolds and Mercia leads an imperial army during the crusades, the kingdom is plagued by a novel and deadly virus, rebellion ensues and economic and political elites maneuver to see that it all unwinds to their best interests. Ironically, Nemesia’s cold heart may be their savior. There is a fulcrum between security and charity.
