SUMMARY: Mel was a cloaked super-powered representative of a superhuman group entrusted with protecting all Mankind. After being forced to retire, Mel meets Jessie, who agrees to take her place as a costumed heroine. Mel becomes a mentor to the new cape in town as Jessie joyously engages the role of heroine, meeting the other super-types in the big city of Seaholm and beyond.
COMMENTS: This reprints Punchline #1. It’s Christmas Eve and Mel has been shot and is dying she spends her last hours with a stranger named Jessie. Mel passes her superpowers on to Jessie and then doesn’t die after all. Mel begins training Jessie in the use of her new superpowers. We make it through Jessie’s first-day training to be a superhero. We are left with a lot of questions when the comic ends. Who is Mel? Who does she work for? Is she telling the truth? We don’t even know much about Jessie. The only other character we see is Black Arrow. So the story is really just about Mel passing the torch to Jessie who seems to be a random choice. The art is good and the story moved along quickly. It was over before I knew it and I am left wanting to know more. All the goodness of the original Punchline #1 and it’s free!
