SUMMARY: “Sur Saray” is a Year One story set during Tom Evans’ time serving in the Afghanistan war. Tom has returned to active duty after going AWOL to rescue his brother from Site ALEPH, but his unit, the PCE Squad is folded into an unscrupulous mercenary platoon. Frustrated by the injustices he’s witnessing on a daily basis, Tom begins slipping away by night, using his new powers to right the street-level wrongs the military is too unwieldy to effectively address.
COMMENTS: This is the full release of this years FCBD offering from Chapterhouse. As it turns out my LCS didn’t have the Captain Canuck FCBD comic on FCBD so this is the first time I am seeing it. The main story is a tale of Tom Evans but not Captain Canuck. The story is an anti-Afghanistan war story and harsh on the military forces there. I am not sure why Canadian officers are serving with mercenaries. The story gives an interesting perspective on who Tom Evan’s is and what he is all about. It shows an early relationship between Tom and Yvette Arsenault who will become Kébec. It’s a lot of fun to see these characters develop. This book may not be for you depending on your feelings about the war, but for me, this was a great look at what makes TOM EVANS a hero.

The back up was a fun tale of Die Kitty Die and we get to see the first true crossover between Die Kitty Die and the greater Chapterverse.
It’s cool that while most companies produce a reprint for Free Comic Book Day, Chapterhose produced an original story and reprinted it later.
