Ash Parsons was raised to believe she’s special. As someone with a quirk of genetics that lets her teleport things, she’s the golden goose of her family.
Her family is the foundation of a struggling criminal outfit trying to get ahead in the world and Ash is able to pop out whole fleets of cars and entire bank vaults. But while she can teleport valuables and her accomplices, she can’t teleport herself — making every job a trust fall with her family there to catch her and escort her to safety. It’s a perfect setup but as things begin to change and the Parsons move up in the world, Ash will find herself pushing back against her golden cage, with deadly results.
CHRIS SEBELA ON WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT AND WHY HE’S EXCITED FOR IT TO COME OUT:
“The quick pitch is that TRUST FALL is about a woman, Ash Parsons, who can teleport things, but not herself, who relies on her family to catch her at the end of every job. But she lives in an isolated bubble and has never been a part of the real world, all thanks to her family as well. See, Ash’s family is also a crime family and Ash is their golden goose that lets them steal things they could never dream of and elevate them up thru the echelons. They tell her where to go, teach her a narrative about the world so that nothing she does seems like a crime and they drug her to keep her under their thumb when she’s not working. So when Ash begins to push back against this bubble, what she finds underneath it is not going to be pleasant for anyone involved.
There’s a few reasons I’m excited about TRUST FALL. First and foremost is that I get to reunite with Chris Visions, who I collaborated with on my first creator-owned book out thru a publisher, DEAD LETTERS. Working with Chris then was sort of my introduction to that process of working with someone you’ve never met before and we got along so well and fell into sync so easily, I knew I wanted to do another book with him. Just took us several years to make it happen.
Beyond that, I always kinda wanted to do a book with powers in it. Not building a whole universe but just carving out my own little pocket world where one person can do this thing and if they’re doing crimes with it? All the better. I like things where no one even knows what it is much less how to deal with it, brand new unknowns in a world full of knowns. There’s a lot of mysteries going on in this book, and it’s fun to figure out how it all fits together in a satisfying way. I like the singularity of building our own rules and consequences and all the people who live in it and all the different lives they’re living.”
CHRIS ON HIS SECOND BOOK WITH AFTERSHOCK AND WHAT HE FINDS MOST APPEALING ABOUT WORKING WITH THE PUBLISHER:
“I like how open they are to weirdly-shaped ideas. I tried and tried to land my first book with Aftershock, COLD WAR, somewhere where I felt like everyone was on the same page, but it never worked out. AfterShock was the first time where we were all aiming for the same goal: to make as singular and strange a book as we could and just go for it. They put Hayden Sherman and I together and everything clicked right away. I had TRUST FALL in mind as my follow-up with AfterShock and luckily when I pitched it to them, they were fully into it; twice as much once Chris Visions came onboard. They just give me as a creator permission to let loose as much as I want and that kind of freedom is hard to find.”
CHRIS SEBELA ON WHY COMIC FANS SHOULD ADD THIS TITLE TO THEIR PULL LIST:
“It’s both fast and brutal but with a beating heart in the middle of it all. We’re not just rolling out a neat concept and coasting on that, we’re trying to give all this stuff life, give things stakes, give you characters you can care about, root for or against. Also: Chris Visions’ art is amazing and has been since forever. He’s only gotten better since the last time we collaborated. We’re trying to make something that’s completely its own thing, playing around with the structure and the art to deliver something pretty singular. Right now we’re capable of doing anything and Aftershock is letting us. The results should be pretty spectacular.”
CHRIS VISIONS ON HOW HIS EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN SO FAR WORKING WITH CHRIS AND THE REST OF THE CREATIVE TEAM:
“Having worked with Chris before, it’s always a pleasure and I’m excited to be back in the sidecar, laughing maniacally and unloading clips of ink cartridges. Creating with him allows me to pour a lot of the things we love in common into the panels, as well as bits that mean a lot to me: easter eggs, the fashion, and little character nods to other important references. AfterShock has been awesome in allowing me to explore what I can pull from the threads in the story and cut loose. I’m also excited to be coloring my work!”
CHRIS VISIONS ON WHO HE’D LIKE TO STAR IF THIS BOOK WAS TURNED INTO A FILM:
“Oh man, there are a few people that come to mind, some I’ll hold in saying just to save their influence for the reading experience. Janelle Monae is definitely at the heart of Ash though”.
CHRIS VISISON ON HOW HE FIRST HEARD ABOUT AFTERSHOCK AND SOME OF HIS FAVORITE TITLES FROM THEM:
“BABYTEETH was a killer title that brought me into AfterShock. I was able to do a cover for that series and have been catching up ever since. Cold War and Jimmy’s Bastards are dope too.”
