Valiant Comics has always been a unique player in the comic book industry, and “The Valiants #1” is a testament to their enduring presence. This issue, penned by Ryan Cady with art by Al Barrionuevo and a captivating cover by Agustin Alessio, marks yet another bold step for a publisher that has weathered the storm of an ever-changing market.

As a long-time collector of the medium, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of many publishers, but Valiant’s story is one of resilience and passion. Founded in 1989 by the legendary Jim Shooter, Valiant has navigated ownership changes and market shifts to maintain its place in the hearts of fans like myself.

“The Valiants #1” is a refreshing dive into a universe that feels both familiar and innovative. Cady’s writing is sharp and engaging, capturing the essence of Valiant’s storytelling tradition. Barrionuevo’s art is a visually enlightening, bringing depth and motion to the page, while Alessio’s cover art is iconic, promising an adventure that’s as grand as it is intimate.

For those of us who grew up idolizing the heroes of Marvel and DC, Valiant offers a different kind of sanctuary—a place where the underdog thrives and the storytelling is unafraid to take risks. This issue is a prime example of that spirit, with a narrative that hooks you from the first panel and doesn’t let go.

The plot centers around a mysterious sinkhole in the heart of DC, a narrative choice that feels both metaphorical and literal. It’s a gateway to The Faraway, a realm that promises to expand the Valiant universe in exciting new directions. This is the kind of storytelling that keeps the pages turning and the readers guessing.

Valiant has always had the ingredients for greatness: compelling characters, creative teams that push boundaries, and a legacy that’s intertwined with the history of comics. Yet, there’s a sense that they’re on the cusp of something even greater, poised to leap into the stars if only the wider fanbase would take notice.

“The Valiants #1” is a clarion call to all comic book lovers—Valiant is here, and they’re not just playing the game; they’re redefining it. This issue is a title that should already be on your pull-list, for anyone who cherishes the art form and is looking for a story that honors the past while boldly charging into the future.

“The Valiants #1” is a triumph for Valiant Comics. It encapsulates the heart and soul of what makes this publisher so special. As a fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement for what’s to come. Valiant may have been around for thirty-five years, but if this issue is any indication, their journey is far from over. They’re almost there, and I, for one, am rooting for them to make that final leap into the stars.

One last note: If you attended Free Comic Book Day 2024 at your local comic book store this past weekend, you may or may not have been aware that their was an FCBD 2024 release of The Valiants which includes a couple of heroic stories which take you into what’s about to occur. I give The Valiants an 8.9 out of 10.
