This week, I will look at “Waxinator # 1” from Ounce Comics, where a clandestine beauty spa employs the world’s deadliest assassins, including Ximena, the most lethal assassin in that organization. Her services make her stand out, so when she gets contracted to assassinate a pregnant mother and her daughter, it’s her humanity that gets put to the test.

This is a great spin on the whole female assassin troupe that blends the concept of beauty with such brutality that it comes off as going overboard, thankfully it doesn’t take up the entire issue as most of it focuses on the world of Waxinator along with the “beauty is pain” credo that never lets up even after reading it for the first time so I’m hoping that it doesn’t keep coming up as the series progresses, but the blood count quickly resurfaces without missing a beat and to their credit, the writing team of brothers Javier and Jordan Salazar delivers an innovative look at a female assassin struggling with the forces of good and evil in her latest assignment, but that alone helps in making her a true anti-hero to where she doesn’t have to feel like a ruthless yet generic version of Wonder Woman. The Salazar brothers prove they can produce a great script that introduces the protagonist easily, the pacing feels rushed and never finds any footing, especially when getting to know Ximena better. Still, it’s an enjoyable read, and if you’re looking for a strong female character, then “Waxinator” is the comic for you, even if the title sounds like a low-budget movie from Tubi.

Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
