This week, I will look at “Eye Lie Popeye # 1” from Massive Publishing, This is a unique take that blends anime (particularly “Dragonball Z” and “One Piece”) along with a modern-day setting for the legendary sailor and his supporting cast in a way that’s never been done before.
This issue starts with solving the long-standing mystery of how Poeye lost his eye. At the same time, the readers get a very close glimpse into his past that manages to keep the classic elements of Popeye alive and well while adding some dynamic flairs in the action sequences that may be over the top but excel at being bold and magnificent that take full advantage of the manga influence on display. At the same time, Popeye, Olive Oil, Bluto, Eugene the Jeep, and Wimpy himself still have timeless yet lovable personalities that not only endure them to the lifelong Popeye fans but will win over the new ones who are experiencing this series for the first time. To his credit, Marcus Williams did the impossible- he managed to take a pop culture icon such as Popeye and breathe new life into his world that pays complete homage to what’s come before but gives us a new take that is sure to take the readers for a wild ride that looks to be both fun and fresh while reminding the readers why Popeye is still an enduring figure in Pop Culture history awhile giving Manga fans a series that can look forward to.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I will see you all next time.
