Amazing Spider-Man # 57– The major showdown between Spider-Man and Tombstone is just around the corner seeing as how Zeb Wells is close to wrapping up his run on ASM. Hence, he takes the opportunity to throw the readers numerous curveballs
while at the same time taking the title back to its roots by presenting some low-stakes conflicts that define Spidey and stay close to its New York setting while seeing all of the plot elements that Wells laid out come to fruition. The New York underworld looks grittier under Wells’ penmanship while he and John Romita Jr. (Whose artwork has seen better days) prepare to leave, they are more than willing to go out with a bang.
Spider-Man: Reign 2 # 2– There’s not much to go on with this series as the second issue gives the readers a shocking revelation of Mary Jane being Venom while building on the conflict between Peter Parker and an aging and grizzled Miles Morales, it looks as if Kaare Andrews is going through the motions with his plotting because while most of the elements he brings to the table are fun, unfortunately, nothing huge and spectacular happens in this issue but we can take comfort in the fact that Andrews is very busy trying to be the next Todd McFarlane via his art but I’m hoping he picks up the pace with the actual story and while seeing MJ as Venom is a unique concept, let’s pray that Andrews does his best to flesh it further out while making sure there’s an endgame to the story he’s telling.
Uncanny X-Men # 2– Gail Simone and David Marquez continue to bring brilliance and substance to this title and it’s only the second issue as they built on the foundation that they set for the first issue and keep it flowing with ease with the introduction of “The Outliers”, a new group of mutants looking to make a name for themselves but while they feel like a new age version of “The New Mutants”, it’s Simone who manages to inject such bright and wonderful factors in this storyline for the readers to get behind the Outliers and seeing Professor X getting his groove back with a woman named Sarah may come off as sappy but it takes a turn towards the end (**NO SPOILERS**); From Simone’s solid writing to David Marquez producing such amazing art, Uncanny X-Men continues to be another standard bearer for Marvel’s newly minted X-Relaunch.
Wolverine # 1– Following the fall of Krakoa, Logan finds himself in the Canadian woods running with the wolves while being hunted down by longtime enemy Cyber. It’s been quite the year for Logan seeing as how Hugh Jackman returned to the role for “Deadpool & Wolverine” (The grossing MCU movie to date) so it’s only fitting that this title arrives just amid the character’s 50th anniversary and see him going back to being the lone wolf (no pun intended) instead of the being the Marvel Universe’s resident team player makes for a great series as it brings a familiar perspective to this title while making it fresh as possible. The Wolverine/Cyber battle is bloody and violent as one would expect with Nightcrawler (being a good friend to Logan) and some random bystanders being caught in the middle so the stakes can’t get any higher; Yes, this story takes a real “in your face” approach with some interesting elements to explore but there are some moments within the issue that tends to stumble a bit. Still, I’m sure that the creative team of writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Martin Coccolo can continue to bring the heat to the next issue. That being said, this is a great return to form for James Howlett.
