This week I will look at “The Silent Descendents”, a graphic novel by creator/writer DaiQuan Cain. It’s an epic Superhero story that mixes fantasy and drama to great effect while simultaneously introducing the readers to a new yet extreme superhero team for a new generation.
The team consists of seven New York residents who come together to bring down a crime syndicate known as The Chain Gang and its leader, Stephen Fiorelli aka “Chain” (He makes Lex Luthor look like The Pope. No lie); There’s no doubt that Cain is a talented writer that focuses on strong exposition and characterization in his stories as well as introducing each member of the Descendents and their intriguing backstories that the readers can relate to, most of the GN tends to switch up from a superhero story to a Christopher McQuarrie movie then back to being a superhero story, but interestingly enough it works well since Cain is setting up the team to come together to take down Fiorelli but on that part, the rhythm tends to come up short but quickly bounces back thanks to the action sequences as well as the chemistry that developed between each of the team members and the more steamy moments will feel like they were lifted straight from an HBO movie from the 90s, but Cain and artists Felix Morales and Garnabiel supply these elements in order to make sure this is an adult-oriented GN, but with superheroes.
The Silent Descendents takes immediate pride in following in the footsteps of “The Boys” and “Jack Reacher” when it comes to delivering a story full of powerful moments topped off with a “WTH” factor. Since this GN was two decades in the making,g I can honestly say that this is yet another great alternative for comic book fans who enjoy seeing such realism in their comics but with The Silent Descendents, such topics as loyalty and family help in making this a magnificent read.
