Daredevil: Woman Without Fear # 1– Elektra gets her own solo series again thanks in part to the creative efforts of Erica Schultz and Michael Downing as they really scratch the surface when it comes to exploring Elektra’s heroic side as well as introducing a new threat for her to deal with in the form of Crossbones while teasing an eventual showdown between her and Joe Garrison aka The New Punisher that’s sure to make waves; From the great character work as well as the sleek and brooding art by Downing himself, Woman Without Fear is a solid debut worthy of any Daredevil fan’s time.

The Powerpuff Girls # 1– This is truly a fun read that really channels the essence of the show while adding some fresh elements to make it enjoyable; While I was always on the fence about Kelly Thompson’s writing, I find that she excels when it comes to writing about strong yet bombastic female characters so this series is no expectation as her and artist Pauline Ganucheau structure the issue that same way that the show’s episodes were, giving fans something familiar to look forward to and the chemistry between Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles is more lighthearted than ever. Longtime fans will bask in the storytelling being adapted into the comic medium and the easter eggs on display because every creative factor shown in the pages of this issue makes this a great time to be a Powerpuff Girls fan.

Phoenix # 1– Marvel’s “From The Ashes…” initiative continues with this new solo outing featuring none other than Jean Grey and I have to say that this is quite amazing in terms of world-building that sees Jean go off-world for an adventure that she will possible never forget; The fact that this issue opens up with a galaxy setting that works wonderfully when it comes to Phoenix is just incredible and the team of Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo never try to remake anything that Chris Claremont and John Byrne did when they introduced the character in the “Dark Phoenix” saga but instead, takes a fresh approach that never falters right out the gate but stays consistent with every page. Phoenix stories tend to get stale no matter who’s writing them, but this new story arc is something that X-Men fans can look forward to with every issue.

Rock & Roll Biographies: RUN-DMC– Being a lifelong Hip-Hop fan this is a terrific read as it covers every aspect of this iconic group’s rise to fame but the one bright element to come out of this R&B Biographies installment?!- The art was provided by Fresno, CA’s own Nicholas Garza!! Garza’s attention to detail helps bring Greg Boucher’s script alive and after reading this, he truly is the right artist to make this story engaging. Hip-hop fans should not miss this because this is a biography that solidifies RUN-DMC as the immortal Kings of Rock.

The Rocketeer Breaks Free # 1– It was quite a surprise that I found out there was a new Rocketeer series out. While I enjoyed the past few installments written and drawn by Stephen Mooney, it’s sad to say that this new one doesn’t offer anything new mainly because Mooney takes an “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach to this new series as Cliff Secord accompanies girlfriend Betty to San Francisco as she’s there to film a new movie but it looks as if trouble as a way of finding Cliff; I would have like something new and innovative but Mooney is a solid Rocketeer writer so I’ll give him some leeway to see where this story is going but let’s hope Mooney has a few tricks up his sleeve instead of playing it safe.

Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around. I will see you all next time.
