Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace # 1– Iman Vellani, The MCU’s own Kamala Khan reteams with co-writer Sabir Pirzada for a new series that once again shows their love for the character but once again puts her through the trials and tribulations of being a mutant which by the time it takes to read the first few pages, that concept has already worn out its welcome. Yes, Kamala is now a mutant but that aspect gets brought up every now and then, it’s surprising that the writing duo was able to produce a lighthearted story that brought back some familiar elements from the past volumes that will welcome back fans who felt distressed after her passing only to bring her back to life months later (it still stings); While the whole “Kamala’s a Mutant” factor wears thin, this is a wonderful outing thanks in part to the creative team that’s a breath of fresh air.
Shazam! # 9– This is Mark Waid’s final issue of “Shazam” (Josie Campbell has been named the new regular writer) but before he heads off into the sunset, he gives us one big yet goofy adventure with The Creeper in tow (Yes he’s back!); Right away, the issue relies heavily on nostalgia but in a fun way that kept the story interesting and you’ll get a chuckle out of the ending (**NO SPOILERS**) The interactions between The Captain and The Creeper were is clever and made for the ultimate odd couple that made this issue enjoyable so while it’s sad that Waid is leaving, be sure that these nine issues serve as the quintessential era for The Captain.
The Spectacular Spider-Men # 1– Peter Parker and Miles Morales get their own “World’s Finest” title and all I have to say about that is…….IT’S ABOUT TIME!!! It’s always amazing to see Peter and Miles interact with each other thanks to the stellar work of Greg Weisman and Humberto Ramos (Who respectably bring their A-game). Still, this issue feels more like Miles is taking in every aspect of Peter’s world but once they leap into action the chemistry between them shines brighter than ever. What I found the most interesting is how Weisman and Ramos quickly establish the book’s supporting cast with such rigorous joy that we would like to know more about them and we possibly will in due time; For anyone who wants variety in their Spider-Man stories then it is a title I highly recommend simply because it’s a title starring both Spider-Men and, dare I say it?!….it’s Spectacular!!
Ultimate X-Men # 1- Peach Momoko draws, colors, AND writes this new version of Marvel’s favorite mutants that feels more like an alternate take of her “Demon Days” arc than the typical X-Men story. Sure, she adds in some of the X-men lore for good effect but part of the issue never feels like an X-title, it does put the focus on Hisako (otherwise known as Armor) as she discovers the power within herself while going for the psychological factor which may work for a completely different story but in some weird way, Momoko makes it work although it may take a few issues for the superhero aspect to kick into full gear, it’s best to see Momoko flesh out her story only to see some X-Men characters come out the woodwork in time. This issue may lean more on the emotional appeal when it comes to the protagonist, I do believe that this series may or may not bring out the very best in Momoko’s writing but the jury is still out on that, however, this is a new beginning that looks promising but only time will tell.
