Alan Scott: The Green Lantern # 1– The new series shows Alan Scott’s early days in a new light and even though Tim Sheridan’s script gets off to a slow pace, it’s worth your time to get invested due to the action as well as seeing Alan’s life as a superhero is seen through a fascinating new lens; Sheridan makes the best out of his script that keeps the story from being mundane, especially at the very last page (**NO SPOILERS**) which I feel is too much of a cliche but I trust Sheridan to deliver the goods with this series. Green Lantern fans will definitely enjoy seeing Alan Scott in all his glory.
Captain America # 2– The first issue left plenty of room to flesh out Steve Rogers and his new position in life. This second issue just felt not so sensational! While we see some great Steve Rogers moments from his pre-super soldier serum past, the present feels so BLEH! The Spider-Man appearance didn’t bring that “WOW” factor (Which is disappointing as how J. Michael Straczynski knows how to write Spidey, instead we get a BORING Cap/Spidey “team-up” in existence); I would like it if JMS gave Steve and his new supporting cast a purposeful story to be a part of. I pray that issue number three will be better.
Captain Marvel # 1– Alyssa Wong and Jan Bazaldua take over the title to herald the good captain to a new era. I have to say that I’m impressed. Wong clearly knows how to write a flawless superhero story instead of the “let’s be funny for the sake of being funny” aspect that she utilized in her ‘Deadpool” run and while her new costume and a lot that feels quite similar to “The Marvels” (Isn’t it weird that Marvel put out the first issue of this series a month before “The Marvels” hits theaters- Coincidence?! Maybe!); The introduction of a new villain known as The Omen looks promising and the new energy that Wong brings with her script is welcoming for anyone that’s looking for a good cosmic epic and while Kelly Thompson was a tough act to follow, it looks like Alyssa Wong is more than willing to make her mark on this title. Ice Cream Man # 37– In this issue, we are introduced to The Figgybumps (Think The Smurfs meets The Ewoks), a group of children’s characters who go to war in “The Flight of The Figgybumps” but pair it with the suicide of their creator, it makes for a good story that shows the dark side of cartoons and their creators. The issue once again goes back to the dark humor factor mixed in with the horror that helps keep the story balanced
but after reading this issue, it’s a bit surprising that there are no revelations and the ending leaves us with more questions than answers even though we get a big ounce of honesty within this issue it’s still a satisfying read that leaves you wanting more.
