Action Comics Presents: Doomsday Special # 1– One of the most revered Superman villains gets his own special and feels more like an episode of “The Outer Limits (The Showtime version)” than a Superman story since the Man of Steel takes a backseat and Supergirl, along with the Martian Manhunter, take center stage when they find out that Doomsday is in hell now it is up to them to keep him from finding a way out. What’s great about this special is how it sets up a new beginning for Doomsday instead of being looked at as the villain who “killed” Superman (Something DC LOVES to run into the ground); it also gives writer Dan Watters a chance to go all out with the edginess and satanic aspects of this special one would find in an old Vertigo title; Overall it’s a fun read but you’ll definitely want to put on some 80s era Metallica or Slayer when reading this. I also got a HUGE kick out of the return of Bloodwynd (An old alias of The Martian Manhunter) and how he’s now called the “Superman of Hell” (I’m not making that up!). Is it weird in every aspect? YES, but it’s a great way to reintroduce Doomsday to where he’s now back to being a force to be reckoned with.
Giant-Size X-Men # 1 (Facsimile Edition)- The comic that changed everything for the X-Men gets the Facsmile treatment and I feel like anyone will enjoy reading this after so many years as the story still holds up and it turns, introduces us to some of the most memorable mutants that are thriving to this day (That Wolverine sure made a name for himself); A worthy addition to any X-Men fan’s collection.
Marvel Age #1000 – Marvel puts out the red carpet for another 1000th celebration since “Marvel Comics # 1000” in 2019. What makes this one stand out more than the latter is that most of the stories presented here are timeless stories that will remind us why some of us are longtime Marvel fans. The Mark Waid/Alessandro Cappuccio story starring the original Human Torch is one of the true definite gems in this book for anyone interested in the early days of the Marvel Universe. Other features such as Ryan Stegman’s Spider-Man story about our favorite wall-crawler doing his best to make it to Sunday Dinner while battling The Lizard, Dan Slott reuniting with Mike and Laura Allred for a vintage Captain Marvel story, and J. Michael Straczynski and Kaare Andrews’ feature of three young boys named Stan, Jack, and Steve creating the Marvel Universe in a backyard (This one gave me “Amazing Stories” vibes); This special will take you back to a simpler time when Marvel Comics were good so I would recommend this to anyone who loves comics with a passion but yearns for those good old days.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special # 1-BOOM! Studios pull out all the stops for the 30th anniversary of the most well-known superhero team in Pop Culture; Showing all of the perfect elements of the team’s past, present, and future. The legion of MMPR fans will love the content presented in this special and the most excellent surprise within this special? Amy Jo Johnson co-writes a story that looks to set up something exciting in the upcoming “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Re-Imagine” series that looks promising. I was moved by the emotional Zordon/Alpha 5 tale courtesy of Mat Groom, Marco Renna, Sara Antonellini, and Sharon Marino (It will pull at your heartstrings). Be ready to geek out at the sight of the miraculous Moprh sequences that wrap up the special (It’s simply breathtaking!). This is the perfect celebration of this franchise that fans old and new will appreciate while letting us know that the MMPR is the best thing to come out of the ’90s
