Amazing Spider-Man # 87– The Black Cat and Captain America team up to get Peter Parker back in the fighting spirit and hopes that he’ll be ready to take back the mantle of Spider-Man. This premise was fun for what it’s worth, this issue brought back one of Peter’s old “costume” identities – The Bombastic Bag-Man! (First appearance in ASM # 258 and a somewhat modified version from Spectacular Spider-Man # 256); The Bag-Man throwback was a nice touch that brought some fun with it and I should add that the shady layers of The Beyond Corporation are still continuing to come up to the surface that no doubt will have an impact on this title before the relaunch in April. This issue of ASM didn’t exactly fire on all cylinders but managed to be entertaining for the most part.
Mary Jane & Black Cat Beyond # 1– For the most part, I feel like there are many Spider-Man fans that would love to see The Black Cat team up with Mary Jane Watson and it looks like those prayers have been answered with the release of this one-shot that sees the two Femme Fatales at the mercy of Parker Robbins (aka The Hood) who wants his cloak back. A great team-up from Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa that takes the personalities of both ladies and lets them run wild with it, showcasing what makes them so unique and how they fit in the life of Peter Parker. The heist elements are a nice touch thanks in part to the creative team and I hope we get another Black Cat/Mary Jane story sooner than later.
Saga # 55– IT’S BACK!! IT’S FINALLY BACK!! After a three-year hiatus, Hazel and her family return for a new story arc with continues the series that has a “Star Wars” quality to it, and Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples deliver a story that feels like time hasn’t changed. Not to ruin anything, but it feels weird coming back to this series without Marko (**NO SPOILERS**) and The Will and Gwendolyn have a special one-on-one “combat” so to speak (Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink!!); With “Saga” back, the high standards for quality storytelling are back in full effect and because of how great this issue is, we can definitely look forward to the next 108 issues.
