Phantastes is an epic fairy tale by the godfather of the fantasy genre, George MacDonald. MacDonald was the most significant literary influence on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and also impacted Lewis Carroll, Charles Williams, and Madeline L’Engle.
In Phantastes, the main character, newly-21 Anodos, journeys through Fairy Land and encounters magical, mystical, and malevolent creatures. His adventures in Fairy Land challenge, threaten to consume, and ultimately change him—the once self-absorbed youth becomes a self-sacrificing man.
Meredith Finch has adapted Phantastes into a 120-page graphic novel, with stunning original art by Christine Norrie and Eisner-winning / Hugo Award-nominated illustrator Andrew Pepoy. Christine and Andrew have taken unique and unconventional approaches to the paneling for Phantastes, creating an organic layout style that brings vibrancy and transcendence to Fairy Land.
