SUMMARY: The 50-year history of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is documented and celebrated in this lush history of the book collectors and dealers alike have called “The Bible” of the comic book industry. This volume features an extensive interview with Bob Overstreet, commentaries from Paul Levitz, Maggie Thompson, Beau Smith, David T. Alexander, Buddy Saunders, Matt Nelson, Steve Borock, and others, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the Guide, a cover gallery, the Overstreet Hall of Fame, and more.
COMMENTS: In all hobbies, you have books about the hobby. Only in comics do you have a book about, a book about the hobby. It may be confusing to outsiders but in comics, there is only one Bible that cataloged and valued all the comics over the last 50 years. It is not just a list of what was published and what it was worth, which was a Herculean effort in the days before the computer, but it also provided background and commentary on important aspects of the hobby, history of the medium, and investment insights as to what was valuable to the collectors. Some fans are focused on the value of their collection, some are focused on the quantity of comics in their collection, and others are enamored with the history and continuity of the storytelling. Everyone knows the Overstreet Price Guide.
In this volume, you have Paul Levitz, Maggie Thompson, and Buddy Saunders saying nice things about the Guide. But when you get to the Semi-Secret Origin of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide you get the true history of the Guide and what it takes to make it all happen. It’s the personal journey of Robert Overstreet as JC Vaughn does a marvelous job interviewing him a leading us from Bob’s childhood on through the present. There is a nice mix of commentaries and classic articles. The cover gallery for this edition is a gallery of past covers of this amazing history.
I started with the Guide with issue #8 and I always looked forward to it, from the histories to how much my collection had increased in value, I was excited to get it. I combed through the ads to find places that would send me mail order back issues. Collecting was hard in those days. The Overstreet Price Guide had been part of my life for more than 40 years and it is a real joy to read this companion book, Overstreet @ 50.
If you haven’t been purchasing the Guide for the last 50 years this is your chance to see the very best the Guide has had to offer. If you have, you already know this is a book you can’t live without.
Highly recommended.
