3-D Film Archive Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of Their 1st Blu-Ray Release!

October 14, 2024 – The 3-D Film Archive is thrilled to announce that this fall marks the 10th anniversary of their first Blu-Ray release.

The road to that first release was paved with tremendous effort, attention to detail, and dedication to cinephiles seeking thoughtful handling of then-often-forgotten titles in cinema history. Especially 3-D films!

Founded in 1990 by award-winning producer, author, and motion picture archivist Bob Furmanek, the 3-D Film Archive brought their restorations to film festivals and special screenings around the world, quickly becoming known as the leading experts in vintage stereoscopic film restoration.

After three years of rejections, 2014 finally saw the inaugural Blu-Ray entry from the 3-D Film Archive, Dragonfly Squadron, released by Olive Films on October 14th. As interest in home video offerings of classic-era 3-D films increased, the 3-D Film Archive’s restorations became further in demand.

In the ten years following that initial Blu-Ray release, the 3-D Film Archive produced one critically acclaimed restoration after another. With a variety of distribution partners including Kino Lorber, ClassicFlix, Flicker Alley, and BayView Entertainment, the 3-D Film Archive brought fans major releases including 3-D Rarities, Gog, The Maze, Robot Monster, Flesh For Frankenstein, Bwana Devil, Dynasty, and It Came From Outer Space.

Additionally, Furmanek, an Abbott & Costello historian who co-authored the book, Abbott & Costello in Hollywood spearheaded several well-received 3-D Film Archive restorations of films from the comedic duo, as well as their heralded TV show. These included Africa Screams and Jack and the Beanstalk.

The very unique and highly specialized expertise of the 3-D Film Archive has cornered the market on vintage 3-D restoration, single-handedly doing more for vintage stereoscopic preservation than any other organization or archive worldwide.

Between outright purchases and crowdfunding pledges, support from film fans and aficionados has been extraordinary  This ongoing success has even extended into publishing, with the 3-D Film Archive’s first printed work, Robot Monster Comics in 3-D soon to be released.
